WALKING TOUR OF THE HIGH BRIDGE NEIGHBORHOOD IN THE BRONX
Where: East 167th St & River Avenue, Bronx, NY 10452,New York till Organized by :Bronx Historian
Considered an engineering marvel of the day, High Bridge is a classic example of how an ancient system of water technology can play a major role in the expansion of a metropolis. It is the oldest bridge standing in New York City and after so many years of disuse, it is under renovation and slated to open for pedestrian traffic in the near future. To keep the momentum going, Bronx County Historical Society (BCHS) Educator Angel Hernandez will lead a historic walking tour of the High Bridge neighborhood with an inclusion of other historic items throughout the area. This tour will start at the foot of the Bronx-bound staircase of the 167th Street #4 subway station located at the northeast corner. Bronx buses #35,#1, and #2 run near the tour meeting location and it will terminate there as well.
Each tour costs $10 for BCHS members, $15 for non-members.
Contact the Society at (718) 881-8900 to reserve your ticket.
The tours generally run about 75 minutes

In Partnership with
The Morris Jumel Mansion
The Aaron Burr Association in partnership with the Morris-Jumel Mansion is proud to have restored and installed the Eric Maunsbach portrait of Aaron Burr.
The Portrait of Aaron Burr. Eric Maunsbach, a student of John Singer Sargent, created this representational portrait of the third Vice President, based on the composition of paintings by John Vanderlyn of Aaron Burr, from 1802 and 1809. Burr had a close relationship with Vanderlyn, supporting his training at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. A year after Vanderlyn’s return to New York in 1802, he completed the right-facing portrait of Aaron Burr, then Vice-President, and two years before his duel with Alexander Hamilton. Burr rendered in profile also references Vanderlyn’s 1809 painting, appearing dignified and ponderous.
The installation of the portrait of Aaron Burr in the front parlor, which is currently undergoing restoration, the very room where Aaron Burr married Madame Eliza Jumel in 1833. In the Fall of 2015 we look forward to welcoming back the restored portrait of Madame Jumel c.1830, also to be hung in this parlor. It is the Morris-Jumel Mansion’s hope that the conserved portraits flanking each side of the fireplace in the newly renovated Parlor will enhance the historic narrative of Burr and Jumel’s brief union. These portraitsare significant interpretive resource, portraying not only important historical figures but also former residents of the Morris-Jumel Mansion.
Aaron Burr Association of New York Aaron Burr,Jr.,(1756-1836), soldier, lawyer, statesman and the Third Vice President of the United States was an enormously influential public figure whose impact on our legislative life continues to the present. Despite this record of achievement and a legacy of progressive, even radical, political advocacy, Burr's popular image largely devolved from the negative accounts of his political opponents and enemies. A daring soldier of the Revolution with a brilliant rise as a lawyer and politician of the Early Republic. Burr was no less than the first modern politician initiating such causes and the possibility of a native American Indian to be included in Jefferson's cabinet and a Charter Member of the Manumission Society. We contend that Aaron Burr was free of the “virtuosity” claimed by most of the founders.
As the New York Chapter of The Aaron Burr Association, a national organization devoted to study of Aaron Burr, (1756-1836) including the lives and career of Aaron Burr’s family, associates, and the general period of Revolutionary and Federalist American history.
Morris-Jumel Mansion Created as Washington’s Headquarters by the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1904, the mansion has served as a museum for more than a century. Today, the mansion features restored period rooms from the Morris, Washington and Jumel eras. Morris-Jumel Mansion is owned by the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, operated by Morris-Jumel Mansion Inc., and is a member of the Historic House Trust of New York City.
Aaron Burr Cidery, LLC., Traditional Method Ciders Pressed from the Historic Apples of New York. Aaron Burr Cidery, located in Wurtsboro, New York, is a small homestead farm dating back to the early 19th century. We have named our product after Aaron Burr, a founding father and third Vice-President of the United States. Aaron Burr in July 1817 acted as executor and attorney in the settlement of Samuel Bayard's estate and deed to the farm where, during the time of Burr, and not far from New York City, a remarkable thing occurred: perfect climate and soil conditions met up with the nations' philosophic determination for self-sufficiency resulting in the creation of the best cider and cider-culture the world has known. At Aaron Burr Cidery, we strive to recreate that beverage and help restore that culture of self determination and reliance.
