In an article in Curbed NY on June 25 by Nathan Kensinger he has written an expose on the deplorable conditions found in Highbridge Park.  Now is the time for us to develop the area so that we might be able to leverage the work just recently completed by the City Parks & Recreation Department in redeveloping the High Bridge so that the dream of a world class destination in this part of Upper Manhattan can be realized.

Move Afoot to Push for Opening the High Bridge 24/7

In an article on The Uptown Collective penned by Steven Kopstein, he effectively argues that the High Bridge should be open all the times, day and night.  If you have an opinion about this issue please let the rest of the community know how you feel.  You can either put your comment at the end of this post or on Steven's post.  We really want to know what you think.  Contact your assemblyman and tell him what you think about this too!

Now that the High Bridge is Open the DOT wants to make it easier to get there (by bicycle, that is)

WCBS NY has reported today, June 12, 2015, that plans are afoot at the NYC DOT to put bicycle lanes near and in the park to make it easier for bicyclists to get to the High Bridge and other parts of the city.

DOT and Coundilman Ydanis Rodriguez Broke Ground on Uptown Bike Lanes as reported by Streetsblog. org.

Numerous bicyclists have commented about the current difficulty of getting to the High Bridge from Amsterdam Ave.

The High Bridge 5K is the only trail race that takes place in Manhattan.  It is a USATF sanctioned event and follows the NY USATF rules and guidelines.

The course starts on the Bronx side of the High Bridge and quickly enters the Technical up and down trails of High Bridge Park.  It is a hilly course with steep ups and downs.   The race is professionally timed culminating in an awards ceremony.  Refreshments and a wicking athletic shirt with the soon to be released High Bridge 5K logo are provided for all pre-registered runners.  If you register on Race day, you are not guaranteed a T-Shirt!

$25.00 students under 18/active military

Google Adds The High Bridge as a Walking Route to its Maps

For those who want to actually use the High Bridge to get somewhere on foot or by bicycle, Google Maps has already added the pedestrian crossing over the newly opened route via the High Bridge when the trip warrants crossing that bridge (instead of another bridge) as seen in the directions shown for the trip requested above! (if you want to see it directly click here.) However, it incorrectly labels the bridge as the "Cross Bronx Expressway".  Also, you still can't put the High Bridge in as your destination. Well, you can put it in as your destination, but it will direct you to the High Bridge Tower instead.
Make sure to click on the icon that you want the pedestrian route, not the auto route.

That's the way to go Google.

New Public Art Exhibition in Highbridge Park Coordinated with the Opening of the High Bridge

According to Visual Arts News Desk, "NYC Parks will host a public art exhibition of contemporary sculpture...'Consider the Chair' will be on view through November 8, 2015 in Highbridge Park located in northern Manhattan. The sculptures will be placed along the esplanade leading up to the High Bridge, which opened to the public on June 9, 2015.

This exhibition is sponsored by the New York Foundation for the Arts and the Rockaway Artist Alliance.  Art is provided by 14 Sculptors, a group of professional artists, who have been actively exhibiting throughout the metropolitan area, creating a forum for experimental sculpture and principally installation artworks free from the constraints of a commercial viewpoint.   This non-profit tax exempt organization has been functioning under the auspices of the New York Foundation for the Arts for the past 42 years.

NYC Parks' Art in the Parks program has consistently fostered the creation and installation of temporary public art in parks throughout the five boroughs.  Since 1967, collaborations with arts organizations and artists have produced hundreds of public art projects in New York City parks.  For more information visit www.nyc.gov/parks/art."

Celebrating the Reopening of the High Bridge

While the scaffolding has not all been removed and other items here and there that still remain to be done, the High Bridge officially opened this morning, June 9, 2015, amid much pomp and circumstance.  Visitors to this historic New York iconic landmark can now cross the Harlem River on a bridge without having to deal with the motorized traffic so common to most other bridges.  The views are breathtaking.  The vision to restore the High Bridge has been a long time in coming.

High Bridge Opening Ceremony Scheduled

It has been reported that the Opening Ceremony for the High Bridge will be held on June 9, 2015 at 10:30am, there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony at the center of the bridge with many public officials attending to an RSVP event.  Many details have not been provided and there will be no general announcement of the details to the public at large.  This report has been corroborated by two independent sources including an announcement last night June 2, 2015, at a regularly scheduled Community Board 12 Parks and Cultural Affairs meeting, and on a report based upon an inquiry of the same date to the Parks and Recreation Department.  More information will be added here as it becomes available.
