Edith Wharton, Custom of the Country, 1913. As reported in Architect's newsletter that there is a scene in this novel "where the wicked vixen Undine Spragg insists on speeding across the High Bridge in a “horseless carriage” before making her grand entrance at a party so as to rouge her cheeks with a cold snap of air whipping up from the Harlem River."

Thank you so much for putting together all these wonderful artistic pieces of our own High Bridge. I guess the bridge really was the icon of New York before the Brooklyn Bridge was built. With the restoration efforts going on, perhaps it will return to some level of prominence here in the City. The opening next year will be a welcome sight to all New Yorkers.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the web site. These are very interesting. I never looked at the High Bridge as an artistic subject before, but I certainly do see it now. Thanks for assembling all these great works.
ReplyDeleteThank you for this fantastic look back at "High Bridge". I believe I have the earliest oil painting of the bridge. It shows the bridge in the background with a few fishermen in the foreground. I don't know the artist, I believe it was painted in the 1840's. I can't inclose a photo here. I've been looking for someone to help me with identifying this oil painting.
ReplyDeleteGreat Job! Keep up the good work.
