Bicycling on the High Bridge and in Highbridge Park

We are all very excited that the High Bridge will be providing for bicycle as well as pedestrian traffic on the bridge when it opens in 2014.  However, bicycling in Highbridge Park is not new.  The Park already sports the finest Mountain Bicycle Trail in New York City.  A New York Times article has very aptly summarized Mountain Bike activities in the City and in Highbridge Park in particular.

The New York City Mountain Bike Association (NYCMTBA) designed and built the Highbridge trail in conjuction with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation and other parties.  See their web page for further details.  The trail "straddles the rocky cliff band above Harlem River Drive between 155th Street and Dyckman Street, and the trails use this rocky, cliff-strewn terrain to their advantage… routing beginner riders through the shadow of hulking rock cliffs, and taking expert riders up, down and across the steep and challenging cliffside."  The trail was "designed and built in conjunction with pro rider Jim Dellavalle and the Brooklyn Bike Riders."

We are sure that more leisurely bicycling will become an important part of the Park and Bridge after the High Bridge is open to the public.  New York City officials have also indicated that the High Bridge bicycle trail will become an important part of the City's commuter transportation objectives.
